Gunjan Pai is the Founder of Copylove, an award-winning Mumbai-based boutique studio that helps brands build clarity, narrative, and long-term communication systems. Over the past decade, she has worked with more than 500 brands across multiple countries, including global enterprises and emerging startups.

When Words Alone Are Not Enough

Many brands invest heavily in campaigns, content, and visibility, yet struggle to create lasting recall or differentiation. Gunjan Pai recognised early in her career that the issue was not the absence of content, but the absence of clarity. Without a clear foundation, communication becomes inconsistent and fragmented, making it difficult for brands to build long-term equity.

From Advertising to Independent Thinking

Gunjan began her professional journey with leading agencies such as Ogilvy & Mather and Lowe Lintas, where she worked on national campaigns and developed a deep understanding of brand communication.

Over time, she realised that while creativity could generate attention, it was strategy that created sustained impact. This insight led her to step away from traditional agency structures and build something of her own.

The Creation of Copylove

In 2015, with no formal business background and no external funding, Gunjan founded Copylove as a first-generation entrepreneur. The studio was not designed as a conventional copywriting agency. Instead, it was built around the belief that communication should emerge from strategic thinking rather than operate as an isolated function.

Redefining the Role of Copywriting

At Copylove, writing is not treated as an output but as the outcome of deeper strategic work. Every engagement begins with understanding the brand’s purpose, positioning, and voice before any communication is created. This approach ensures that messaging remains consistent, meaningful, and scalable across platforms and time.

The BrandLit™ Framework

To bring structure to this philosophy, Gunjan developed the BrandLit™ framework, which anchors each project in clarity before execution. The framework defines a brand’s belief system, positioning, tone, and narrative, enabling communication to evolve into a cohesive system rather than a series of disconnected campaigns.

This structured approach has resulted in long-term partnerships, with a significant portion of the company’s revenue coming from repeat clients and referrals, reflecting sustained value creation.

Building Systems Instead of Campaigns

Copylove’s work focuses on building communication ecosystems rather than one-time outputs. This includes developing brand language frameworks, leadership narratives, corporate publications, and content systems that can scale across teams and markets. Increasingly, organisations engage the studio at the strategic level, influencing decision-making rather than execution alone.

Resilience Through Personal and Professional Challenges

In 2018, Gunjan faced a profound personal loss with the passing of her husband and co-founder, at a time when the business was also navigating structural challenges. Rebuilding required both emotional resilience and strategic clarity. She invested in structured learning through global programs such as the Goldman Sachs 10,000 Women initiative and restructured the business to reduce dependency risks.

Adapting in a Changing Industry

The emergence of generative AI significantly disrupted the content industry, challenging traditional copywriting models. Instead of resisting the shift, Gunjan repositioned Copylove as a strategy-first advisory practice. This transition strengthened the company’s positioning, deepened client relationships, and ensured long-term relevance.

A Distinctive Operating Model

Copylove operates as a remote-first, all-women team, a model established well before it became mainstream. This structure allows access to diverse talent, operational flexibility, and cost efficiency while maintaining high standards of work. The studio has remained bootstrapped since inception, growing organically through reputation and quality rather than external funding.

Extending Impact Beyond Business

Alongside building Copylove, Gunjan actively mentors entrepreneurs through platforms such as Google for Startups, Wadhwani Foundation, and IIM Mumbai. Through these engagements, she has supported over a thousand entrepreneurs and several hundred students, contributing to the broader ecosystem of business and leadership development.

The company also allocates a portion of its revenue toward animal welfare initiatives, reflecting a commitment to purpose beyond profit.

A Philosophy Grounded in Purpose

Gunjan’s approach is rooted in the belief that communication should serve a clear purpose. Writing, in her view, is not an isolated act but part of a larger system that defines how a brand is understood and remembered over time.

Advice to Women Entrepreneurs

Her advice is grounded in both experience and strategy. She encourages founders to build businesses aligned with their values rather than chasing trends, to invest early in clarity of positioning and financial discipline, and to actively seek mentorship and collaborative networks. She emphasises that sustainable growth is often driven by consistency and differentiation rather than rapid expansion.

Why Gunjan Pai Stands Out

Gunjan Pai has built more than a copywriting studio. She has created a strategy-led communication practice that bridges thinking and execution, combining creative craft with business clarity. Her work reflects a long-term approach to brand building, one that prioritises meaning, structure, and sustained impact.

In a world saturated with content, clarity has become the true differentiator. Gunjan Pai’s work demonstrates that when communication is rooted in purpose and strategy, it does more than convey a message. It builds identity, trust, and lasting value.
